Harshitha Sai Viswanathan

Master of Marine Affairs

Washington Sea Grant Hershman Fellow

I am a recently minted Master of Marine Affairs trained at the University of Washington School of Marine and Environmental Affairs. My work specializes in applying the human dimensions of ocean and coastal governance to create efficient, equitable, and just policies in the context of climate change and coastal adaptation. My graduate training and certificate in International Development Policy and Management have fostered interdisciplinary thought and skills in the life cycle of policymaking to account for the dynamic and interconnected nature of 21st-century environmental challenges. I am seeking a job where I can apply my background and training to new contexts, and am committed to supporting ocean and coastal policy development and implementation through community-centered approaches that inform socio-cultural, ecological, economic, and political resiliency and sustainability.

Research Interests

My academic and lived experiences have piqued my interest in the human and social dimensions of conservation in environmental policies. This includes research pertaining to climate risks and vulnerabilities, themes of sustainable development, tourism systems, and the human dimensions of global change in the context of ocean and coastal challenges exacerbated by anthropogenic pressures.

I pursue this work with an extensive background in marine ecology and international development policy, using quantitative and qualitative approaches to address issues of strategic ocean and coastal resource management, climate mitigation and adaptation, and community resiliency at local, global, and international scales.
